The making of
Another collaboration with Michael John Warren, Free Meek was a year-long process of music experimentation. The life & times of rapper Meek Mill is full of ups & downs, complete with a soundtrack of his own making. It seemed like we could easily craft music to sit alongside his catalog for the series.
However we quickly realized that our music would have to live in the in-between. Where his music was big, energetic and over-the-top, we needed to find the heart, the vulnerability and the real conspiracy stacked against him.
The piece titled, ‘Perseverance’, became our theme song and everything was borne of that. Growing from intimate human voices to full horn section, gospel choir and rhythm section, it hit the highs and lows we needed.
Then as more of the court proceedings entered the cut we delved further and further into the investigatory music world — always fusing that with hip-hop and modern electronic music.
Spiritually it was a dream to work on something culturally important and needed. The show was a painful reminder of what has been corrupted in our court systems and a hopeful demonstration of what just one person can do to fight against it.
