The making of
Sherpas Cinema & National Geographic teamed up for this super cool VR tour that documents the work of female Explorers who have dedicated their careers to water related issues.
Spread across four episodes set around the globe this was my first experience working in Virtual Reality. Steve Henderson directed the series and it was fantastic working with him throughout the process — discovering the right level of interest for each moment and the right textural details to support the different locales.
The 360-degree experience completely changed my approach to scoring-to-picture. I used an Oculus while composing to make sure that I wasn’t writing music that would be distracting. Time-stretched, atmospheric layers became a starting place and you wouldn’t believe how much time I spent crafting those initial sounds. The textural ‘pad’ elements had to be perfect in order to work as the starting bed.
Even if you don’t own an Oculus I highly encourage everyone to just try out the YouTube videos on their phone. It’s cool to spin around and see these places the freedom to move and focus on whatever YOU want to see.
