The making of
At the center of this project is the trumpet — musically speaking. Early on we decided that Kevin Hart, if he were an instrument, would best be represented by the energy and versatility of a trumpet.
Stylistically it is all 70s jazz, R&B, funk and rock music and we knew in order to capture the right vibe we’d want to record in New York. While we were in Manhattan for the Free Meek premiere we decided to start tracking ideas for the editors.
Many of my favorite musicians were able to make the sessions: Sean Jones, Dontae Winslow, Keyon Harrold, Alex Norris, Russell Kirk, Chris Park, Brett Williams, Jeremy McDonald, Jordan Rose, Jake Goldbas and Bryan Bissordi. The vocalist evrYwhr also contributed to several songs and we couldn’t be happier with the results.
One of the biggest joys we had on this though was working on the Main Title sequence. We crafted original music for the animated opening that follows Kevin through a summary of emotional ups & downs.
