Jacob Yoffee is...
a Los Angeles based composer who collaborates with some of the most respected names in the TV & Film Industry. Since 2008 he has worked with hundreds of filmmakers on projects of all genres.
Starting his career as a composer in a classical conservatory Jacob has a strong orchestral foundation. But very early on he was exposed to modern Jazz and spent a decade exploring that world, which led him to New York. He made a living performing in all kinds of bands & groups: Rock, Pop, Music Theatre, Country, Neo-Soul, Hip-hop, Big-Band Jazz, Chamber music, etc… This provided an incredible knowledge-base to draw upon when scoring films.
In 2016 he met Roahn Hylton in Israel and the two became great friends. They have been working together ever since, creating the music group Th3rdstream in 2018. Since then they have scored 6 series together and have worked on film/television projects with Jay-Z, Robert Downey, Jr., Kevin Hart and Janelle Monae.
He has continued to compose traditional concert music and is still currently the Resident Composer for the American Studio Orchestra. His concert music has been performed in the US and Great Britain at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Royal Academy of Music and on BBC Radio.
As a Jazz artist Jacob was signed to Inner Circle Music Records in 2007, releasing his debut album, “Dead Reckoning.” The album’s release concert rave reviews in the New York Times and was featured on the cover of Saxophone Journal magazine.
He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Orchestral Composition & Jazz Performance and a Master’s degree from New York University where he studied with Ira Newborn, Sonny Kompanek and Deniz Hughes. While at Peabody he studied with composers Morris Moshe Cotel, Christopher Theofanidis and the saxophone legend, Gary Thomas. In May 2012 he was awarded ‘Outstanding Recent Graduate’ from Johns Hopkins University
The Studio
- My philosophy is a meshing of the old & the new, the electric & the acoustic
- To balance out the modern computer vibe I have housed everything in a custom-made Black Walnut desk, the Doepfer keyboard, the synths and the computer housed inside, with all the cables hidden from view.
- Alongside the computer rig I've got a 100-year old piano with the wonderful clacky keys and noisy soundboard to go along with it.
- The synth rack: the Arturia Matrixbrute, the DSI Prophet 12 and an old 80s board --- the Juno 2
- Not pictured are my pride and joy -- a bookshelf of scores, many have been with me since I was in Middle School, I'll never finish studying them.
